Intensive Outpatient Programs
Intensive Outpatient Programs
EDTC Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) were created to help those in need of more intensive treatment and support than outpatient therapy alone can provide. Our IOPs function as the next level of care between outpatient individual therapy and inpatient treatment, which usually involves admission to an out-of-state facility. IOP provides skills and tools which can be used to arrest and reverse the progress of the eating disorder.
The intensive outpatient program can also function as a “step-down” treatment after discharge from an inpatient or residential facility. This step down in level of care has proven benefits for those in recovery and returning from an inpatient or residential facility. The step-down format provides continuity of care, thereby protecting recovery and avoiding the experience of being thrown from the “warm blankets into the icy waters” of everyday living.
The Eating Disorders Treatment Center provides Programs designed specifically to address patient needs. We have programs for Adolescents and Adults. We have separate Adult groups designed specifically to address Binge Eating Disordered behaviors, or those struggling with either Anorexia Nervosa or Bulimia Nervosa.
An example of one of the many ways we work with our clients in the IOP to cope with everyday living is the therapeutic meal process. Our dietitians work with our clients to help them plan and build a simple, nutritious meal to eat with the group each evening. At the conclusion of the meal our therapists then work together with our clients to process the experience. As a part of the IOP, each client receives a nutritional evaluation and one-on-one counseling with one of our staff dietitians.
In addition to nutritional counseling, our IOPs may employ the following therapeutic methods to help our clients to progress through and beyond their eating disorders to a healthier and better life.
- CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy)
- DBT (dialectical behavioral therapy)
- ACT (Acceptance Commitment Therapy)
- Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (a form of somatic therapy)
- Psychotherapy
- Expressive and Experiential Methods including, but not limited to Art Therapy, Psychodrama, Yoga, Mindfulness, Meditation, and Use of Metaphors
- Psychoeducation for clients and families
